The MDGs, post 2015 and Beijing +20 - Regional Perspectives
John Hendra, (UN Women) spoke about the priorities for women, namely access to quality education, including the completion of education. Gender stereotype continues in education and we must look also at the quality of education. Access to work is important and women's labour force participation, currently at 25% in some countries. Quality employment and women's engagement in unpaid care work recognized.
More equitable distribution of unpaid work, public services provided, infrastructure like water so women don't need to spend time walking to fetch water. Oxfam has looked at the extreme distribution of income between men and women.
Representative from Poland spoke, knows there willbe fewer workers looking ahead, women are an excellent resource. Smart to have women. Congress of women, numbers of men and women in parliament more equal - concerns: sexualization of children, violence against women.
Barbara Lee, congress woman California and in above photo - Women make up 50 % of work force now in the US. Much of the labour force supports are outdated. Economy, health and political participation very important- Economic security for women. Spoke of Obamas health care. Not close to parity politically.daunting challenges for women, politically. When women succeed, the whole world gains.
Speaker on the necessity to take action on tobacco, NCDs or non communicable diseases affecting women - 65 per cent a year cause of death, tobacco influence NCDs, include in Sustainable Development Goals, one way to reduce is to increase taxes. Solution to NCDs.
Last speaker recommended the use of quotas to increase women's political participation. It is a means for policy change. Importance of women in decionmakimg. MDGs very vague. SDGs include more targets, nordic counties have 42.1 percent but lower than rawanda. Incremental model, global south, historical jumps, fast track. Sustainable of fast track? More transformative with fast track. Political parties of elected positions. Responsibility of political parties to set targets . Arab countries must address this. Women don't vote for women? Don't blame women, blame parties.
86 countries gender quotos. Parties don't look seriously and they should.
