Women, Peace, and Demilitarization - with Madeline Rees

I was fortunate to attend two sessions, one sponsored by the Women's International League for Peace and Freedom, and one  by the Global Center for Women's  Global Leadership. Madeline Rees, Secretary General for WILPF, participated in both.

The first panel was on the linkages between economic rights, gender based violence and sustainable development. The second panel was No Development with out Disarmament. The strong message in both is how serious the militarization of our planet is to the continuing survival of our planet. The arms trade is basically fueling wars, and getting guns, and now more sophisticated weapons, like drones, are causing havoc and destruction in many parts of the world. The military is controlled by men and is a very male world. Women are pressing for things like Small Arms Control treaty, but much more needs to be done.
