Women Human Rights Defenders and more at CSW 58!

More from Day 1 and sessions at the CSW - a very full day!

The session on Protecting Women Human Rights Defenders was well done, and was moderated by Charlotte Bunch, well known for her work to make women's rights are human rights and human rights are women's rights. It was done in a "conversational" style with two women speaking, one from Mexico and Central America, and the other from Iran. Both these women spoke of the challenges in their countries for defending women's basic rights to live a life free of violence. Women who stand up for women's rights are dealt with very severely, often imprisoned and killed.

It is significant to note, as John Hendra (UN Women Deputy Executive Director) stated, that the UN passed in  December 2013 a Resolution on the Protection of Women Human Rights Defenders. More must be done to see it is enforced.
